About the Festival - english version - german version

The Kuks Music Summer (Hudební léto Kuks) Festival is an international music festival dedicated to classical music, taking part in the Trinity Church in Kuks.

At the 8th Festival, taking part from June 24th to August 19th, 2017, will again appear a number of excellent performers. In the past years, there appeared the violinists Ivan Ženatý, Václav Hudeček, Josef Špaček and Gabriela Demeterová, the bass-baritone Adam Plachetka, the countertenor David Erler, the sopranos Michiyo Keiko, Natalia Rubiś, Jana Jonášová and Kateřina Kněžíková, the cellist Jiří Bárta, the horn player Radek Baborák, the trumpet player Miroslav Kejmar, the harpist Jana Boušková, the organists Jaroslav Tůma and Aleš Bárta, the harpsichord players Vojtěch Spurný and Barbara Maria Willi, the oboe player Vilém Veverka, the guitar player Pavel Steidl, the ensembles Schola Gregoriana Pragensis, Collegium 1704, Ensemble Inégal, Collegium Marianum, Škampa Quartet, the Czech boy choir Boni pueri, and others.

The festival programmes include modern premieres of the music from the Kuks collection, founded in the late 18th century by the Brothers Hospitallers.

The festival also supports contemporary music, by asking composers to write special works, which are given here their world premieres. These works are inspired by the Sporck arias (the Kuks founder Count Franz Anton Sporck’s favourite songs). In the past years, Emil Viklický based his work on the Bonrepos aria, the Prague Academy of Performing Arts professor Ivan Kurz based his composition on the Hubert aria and the Prague Academy of Performing Arts docent Otomar Kvěch based his composition on the Hare aria. In this year, another composition, based on one of these arias, will be performed.

The Festival is organised by the Královédvorský chrámový sbor (Dvůr Králové Church Choir) and the Kuks Monastery Management.
